‘Studies In Texture and Flow’

The triptych of canvases in this catalogue were completed in March and April, 2020 while artist Tristan Eaton was under mandatory quarantine in Los Angeles, CA. In large format (48” x 72”), these paintings are a combination of spray paint on canvas mounted to wood panel and an additional layer of laser cut MDF detail mounted to the panel for a 3D, relief effect.

The inspiration for this series in the artists’ words: “While exploring portraiture in my work, I desired a break from painting actual human skin. I set out to find alternate textures for portrait painting as they exist in sculpture. I sought out expressive examples of human portraiture in Bronze, Marble and Porcelain. The final subjects featured in these paintings are Francis Harwood’s bronze ‘Bust of a Man’ (1758), a marble bust of Apollo Belvedere (1780) from the Vatican Museum and a porcelain bust of Mao Zedong originally made by artist Wang Wei in 1972. These alternative textures allow for new ways to paint light, detail and surface while still capturing the human form.

Beyond the portraiture is a field of color and design that is developed from a designers’ approach to painting. I believe that the motion, balance and energy of abstract painting can be achieved by welding illustrative and graphic imagery as brush strokes and compositional forms. The meaning and significance of the imagery is irrelevant. The function in color, flow and placement of these shapes as they populate the composition is why they matter. Instead of representing narrative, these graphic forms now evoke emotion and response simply by how they interact, overlap and control the visual architecture around the portraiture. The color forms become abstract and lose their real world meaning as the portraiture does the same. What’s left is a study in texture and flow that leaves the door open to each viewers emotional response.”

Spray Paint on Canvas, Laser Etched MDF, Hydro-Dipped Aerosol, Wheat Paste & Paper

I set out to make a series of unique, separate portrait paintings each made with a different style and technique depicting the subject. I then pulled them apart, mixed them up and re-assembled them with unpredictable results.

The spray paint, laser-etching, wheat paste and hydro-dipping techniques all had distinct and opposite final results. Each portrait was painted on identical panels of 85 individual ‘puzzle’ like pieces, allowing them to fall on the same laser cut template. Once made, all four paintings were deconstructed, scram- bled, then reassembled in chaotic order, creating a brand new series of works. The final paintings are a ‘Frankenstein’ style amalgamation of all the separate parts and different visual styles now reborn into something new.

An experiment in collage, puzzle making, painting technique and portraiture, this series of paintings breaks new ground for me technically and conceptually.

The ‘SAFE & LOVED’ diptych is a visual exploration of the evolving role of man in society and family. A wise woman once told me: “Every woman in the world wants two things. To feel SAFE and to be LOVED”. Is this true? Can a man ever live up to this?

The expectation men have for their role as a husband and father creates natural burdens and struggles. Can we provide? Can we protect? Will we fail in these areas? The notion of manhood is naturally influenced by the role models we have, yet an abyss of uncertainty, self doubt and clumsy optimism seem to be the only things guaranteed. In the end, our success or failure will not be ours to judge, but making our loved ones feel SAFE & LOVED is a good road map.
